Train to gain

Train to Gain & Learn to Earn

What is It?

Train to Gain is the name given to Government funding specifically for employers to train their staff.

The scheme recognises that colleges and training providers need to be responsive to employers and be able to offer training on your terms i.e. appropriate to the needs of your business and at a time and place to suit you and your staff.

Why is the Government doing this?

The Government is providing this funding in order to improve the skills of the workforce in Britain, and thereby to improve productivity and economic growth.

How can Business at SCOLA help me?

We can advise you about Train to Gain and whether your employees are eligible for FREE training.

Who is eligible for FREE training?

Generally, the funding is only for adults who are -

  • Employees who are below a Level 2 i.e. whose qualifications are below 5 GCSEs at grades A* to C or equivalent. The funding is meant to help people gain their first full Level 2 qualification which could be 5 GCSEs, an NVQ Level 2 or a BTEC Diploma. This is called the Level 2 Entitlement or L2E (Learn to Earn).
However, there may be free places available for those who are already above level 2 (except Teaching Assistants)
  • Level 3 NVQ's are only free to people who do not already have a full level 2 qualification. Otherwise, the LSC will co-fund with the employer expected to pay half (currently £438 as at March 2009)
  • Employees who are British or European citizens who have been resident in the UK or the enlarged EU for the last 3 years (or those who have been granted Exceptional or Indefinite Leave to Remain).
  • Skills for Life qualifications (for improving literacy and numeracy skills) through Train to Gain are for people who are working but do not have a level 2 in literacy and/or numeracy. We offer these as IT (computing) with embedded literacy and numeracy.
